How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

During the production of the project, we had to take into consideration the point of ancillary tasks and why they are crucial and required in the media. The magazine advert is used to advertise to the audience that an artist has released a new album, magazine advert is also used to aware the audience about the music artist. This will help increase the sales of the album and boost artist fans.
Our ancillary task effectively combines with our main product by using constant genre characteristics, as we discovered that Jack Penate was an indie, rock type artist and therefore, we used an image of the artist (Jamie Burton) smashing a guitar against the piano, and this gave an indie/rock image towards the viewer. In the music video we used Khaki green shirt with buttoned all the way to the top because Jack Penate is dressed up similarly in his music video. The grey bobble hat worn by the artist and acoustic guitar used by the artist in the music video and also in the album cover image added future Indie/Rock vibe. While our ancillary research, I found out how Lady Gaga’s magazine advert had two different images of her on magazine advert. These two different images reflected on how Lady Gaga’s personality is, there is a wild odd look of Lady Gaga and there is also a graceful, elegant look.

We used this concept in our Digi-Pack by dressing the artist on the front cover in an indie/rock look and on the back cover, the artist is dressed up formally. This explains that there is more than one image of the artist, there is an indie/rock look of the artist and there is also a formal, mature look of the artist. The front cover of the album and the music video shows the artist (Jamie Burton) in a laid back, authentic and has do-it-yourself attitude, this kind of look of the artists is usually adored by late teens and early 20’s.
By dressing the artist with Khaki shirt and bobble hat gives young indie look, as this is a stereotypical towards the artist. The images used on the album cover and magazine advert are taken while filming which makes the music video and ancillary more consistent. The location we used to film the artist performance was a small room to give it a casual, laid back, relaxing look. We also choose this location and dressing code so the audience can recognise from the magazine advert and relate it to indie/rock genre; this should also attract the audience and increase the sales of the album copies.
The font we decided to use on the album cover and magazine advert is called “Baskerville old face,” we didn’t use range of colours but yet made the text look eye catching, stylish and classy. We chose this font because “Baskerville old face” font goes well with the product, ancillary and genre of music and Jack Penate also uses this font on his official website.

Magazine advert analysis

Bellow is a image of our magazine advert. The image shows a picture of the artist smashing a guitar against a piano. We took pictures whilst filming in order to create this. From looking at other magazine adverts we noticed the different logo's involved and so we made ours as realistic as possible. However, the ad had to be relevent to the artist. Therefore, it had to have a indie/rock image towards the viewer so they knew what sort of music the artist produced. Costume and location was also important. We used the green shirt and the bobble hat to get a young indie look as this was stereotypical towards the artist. Included on the ad is when it is going to be released, reviews from other companies, the artists website details and finally the correct font to make it again realistic and apropiate for the genre of artist.

Location We Filmed In

Costume and Props analysis

In order to create a good music video as a group we needed to makesure the apperance of the artist was realistic. Therefore, bellow are some props and costumes that we used in the Video. From our reasearch into the artist we found that he was a indie, rock type artist anbd therefore, a kahki green shirt seemed to be suitable. In the video it was buttoned all the way to the top because in Jack Penate's music video this was his apperance. The grey bobble hat then just added a further indie/rock vibe to the performer. An acoustic guitar was also used in the video this also backs the apperance of the artist to make it as realistic as possible. Bellow is some poictures to show the costumes and props.

Target Audience

Target audience is very important for artists in considering who they want their music video to be watched by and who it targets. Our video is the genre of Indie rock and our target audience is for people in their late teens and early 20's. Jack Penate is the artist and is a young man in his 20Ăs and was also known to be a DJ when he was a teenager. Therefore due to this, we believe that the target audience will be late teens and early 20Ăs. So to attract this age group our video had to have some young influential images to do with the song and it also had to have some performance involved. We believed this idea would be unique and would attract our target audience in the best possible way.

The gender split for our music video is about 60%-40% boys to girls, the reason being is that because an indie rock group may traditionally attract more boys than girl.. The age range we believe could be between 15-22 yrs old. The reason being is because this type of music presents well known stereotypes of late teens and early 20 year olds.

Finally the area in which people live in may be a factor on who likes it. I believe that this sort of genre would come across to people living on the suburbs of cities and to some people in the inner city areas.

This then links to the demographics of the targeted audience. Demographics is most commonly described as, the most recent statistical characteristics of a population. Our demographic audience applies to people having middle class jobs such as, teachers and graphic designers. Furthermore, it also applies to the demographic group of low middle class people and people at the lowest end of pay. These include students and mainly young people involved in this category. Furthermore, the formation of demographics also follows on to psychographics, these are people who are defined by the way there personality is. Marlowís Hierarchy is the results into how the segmentation of groups is split. It isnít just split into personality types Marlow's hierarchy also attempted to account for people's needs - ie how a media product may serve a person's self esteem needs, their safety needs and the physiological needs of the viewers. The psychographic viewers for our target audience would be people who are, we believe, 'explorers' because the upbeat tempo of the song may be described as a way of discovering. It may also cover the 'struggler type' because of the age range we believe our target audience fits. These people make ìfew plans for tomorrowî. These two categories are the psychographic audience categories that we as a group have tried to attract. The reason being is because our song is upbeat and we believe this is who it would come across to the most.

Risk Assesment

In order to create a good music video, certain precautions must be considered to keep the environment safe. In our music video we have shot in various locations and a risk assessment is appropriate towards it. Shooting in London is the main risk, as there is a reasonably high crime rate. Therefore, we had to be careful on the journey and in London itself.
1) Getting on and off the train was important as sometimes it can become a risk. Especially when there is a gap between the platform and the train.
2) Making sure equipment is also checked on the journey in case it becomes risk to us and others around us. Also without equipment in top form we can’t make a good music video.
These two risks are very small but small risks can become exploited and therefore, become disastress. These were main risks to look out for on the journey. However, bellow is risks we had to keep in mind for when we were in London.
1) As London is a very big and busy place we had to make sure we were aware of what was around us. For example roads and people, where the location was compared to what risks we may face. Filming next to a road could become dangerous as it may distract drivers and people around us might not want to be filmed and therefore, they may get angry so we might have become at risk.
2) Filming in a very busy train station could cause multiple risks. Due to the amount of trains around. Getting to close to the tracks may also be a risk as we could fall and injure ourselves.
3) Making sure again, that equipment was in good shape and that we always had an eye on it, because it may have been noticed by others and could be stolen or arguments may come into hand.
4) Using the equipment properly is also important because it may be a risk to us if we use it wrong. An injury may occur.
5) We also covered all areas of safety by having our mobile phones in case there was a problem. We knew the important emergency numbers we may have needed to use and most importantly our parents knew where and what we were doing.
6) Time awareness is also important because losing track of time may enable us to a risk in London to some members of the public.
These are the risks we had to keep in consideration when we were in London. Keeping to these are very important. Even those some of these are very minor again small risks can become big ones if they are not watched properly.
Our final filming location was in school. School is a lot safer than London and risk assessments were a lot easier to make.
1) Making sure our location was out the way of any other pupils and classrooms that may have risk such as the D.T rooms.
2) Making sure the area that we were filming in was safe to the environment. For example any plug sockets or equipment left out was out the way because they may cause risks to us producing the video.

Each of these assessments are all important risks to keep in consideration when we are filming to make sure that we are safe and to make sure the equipment is safe.

project management

Project Management is managing your work to make tasks easier for your group and so we can be successful in our work. As a group we realised that in order to create a good music video we would have to do some project management to help us. We did this by using schedules and creating jobs for each of us in a group. I booked the camera for various days and we tried to keep to those days to film. Therefore, in October I booked the 5th, 12th, and 16th for a camera and a tripod to start filming, our music video. However, it isn’t all to do with booking cameras and filming it also helps if different people have jobs. We split each other into groups so we could get jobs done quickly and efficiently, at a good quality standard. Shahroz was our editor as he has the skills in computing and he would be the best person to be in charge of editing; he did have some help from me and Jamie however. Myself and Jamie where in charge of blog work and organising days to film as the project went on we realised communication was key and doing small amounts on our blog each week would help us.

Textual Analysis : Rihanna ft Drake - What's My Name

‘What’s my name?’ is a song by Barbadian artist Rihanna. The song is a collaboration with the hip-hop star Drake. It is the 2nd song to be released from Rihanna’s 5th album ‘Loud’. ‘What’s my name?’ was a commercial success , topping the US billboard Hot 100 and giving Rihanna her third number-one single in 2010 and it also became Drakes number-one single.
The video of ‘What’s my name?’ kicks off with an extreme close up, focussing on her lips, a body part to attract the male audience and her hair; to show off her trendy hair colour for the women audience to idolize. She also shows off her tattoo/bling which links to the hip- hop genre as Andrew Goodwin suggested that music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. Then there is a use of an establishing shot in the music video, to show the audience where the actions take place, and in this music video the example would be New York City, which is once again linked to the genre of the successful music video. There is a use of Medium shot used half way through the video when Rihanna is dancing on the streets of the City and this shot helps her link with her surroundings. There is a two shot where the relationship between Rihanna and Drake is shown and this creates an aspiring scene for the audience. An over the shoulder shot in the video is when Rihanna is looking at Drake, this explains the intimacy between them; at this point the audience can see what the character (Rihanna) is looking at.
When the music video starts, Rihanna is singing to a steady tempo, but when Drake comes in to rap, the speed of the music goes faster as he is rapping; also there is a sense of diminuendo – the music decreases in volume when he starts rapping. During that scene, When Rihanna enters in the supermarket; there is a shot-reverse-shot as when Rihanna walks in Drake and her show an interaction. In the same scene, there is a reaction shot when there is a close-up on Drake and it shows him response towards Rihanna. As Andrew Goodwin identified that one of the demands of record labels are the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work, and in my opinion Drake has developed a motif which is rapping/singing in a reluctant way which he has done in this video. The music is synchronous as when Drake is rapping, there is action taking place between him and Rihanna, and to support that action, he says “I can get you through a mighty long day, soon as you go the text im gonna write is gon’ say” this suggests that he is interested in her and they’re sensing a relationship.
The lighting used in the video ‘what’s my name?’ is very soft and calm matching with the soft atmosphere , for example when Rihanna is in the apartment she is walking out of lighting which gives her an angelic persona. The costumes of the characters link to the genre of the song(RnB/Hip-hop), as Drake is wearing a casual hoodie and this also creates a laid back character and he also sings in this manner. Rihanna’s dressing was also very casual but along with that, very trendy as she was wearing Jack Wills, a famous designer within the female and when she wore that she set out a fashion for all her female audience. The setting of the video is quite unexpected from an RnB genre as it is in an apartment which is least likely. However, it’s set in the city which is typical for RnB but, ‘the dream lifestyle’ doesn’t feature as much as in other RnB videos. (Against conventions)
A narrative is used so the audience knows what happens next in a video. It can also create a story that the audience can relate or aspire to. The narrative of this video is that Drake and Rihanna meet each other in a supermarket and then they are living together in an apartment. The narrative doesn’t strongly relate but as Andrew Goodwin identified that there is a relationship between lyric and visuals, there are certain lines of the song that narrate what is happening in the video, for example, “I heard you good with soft lips, yeah you know word of mouth” by saying this Drake is suggesting that he knew Rihanna was into him and he was interested in her too, and this happens after Rihanna turns around and gives Drake a signal that she’s attracted to him. Another example is when Rihanna sings “there ain’t nowhere that I’d be than with your arms around me, back and fourth you rock me” when she is singing this, in the video she is cuddling up with Drake and they look like they’re having a great time together. In the music video, Drake is performing in an indirect mode, as he is singing looking at Rihanna, not singing to the audience reinforces the idea that the video is a narrative & that this is the start of their ‘relationship’. Whereas Rihanna is singing in a direct mode and this give the audience and impression that she’s singing to them and it makes them feel involved. Dancing while looking in the camera attracts the male audience as Rihanna is dancing and singing to them.
In the music video “What’s my name” there is a rare use of editing, which might be a reason why its very successful within the audience as its all authentic. However, there is a use of eye-line match when Rihanna enters the supermarket and Drake looks at her, we can see from where Drake is looking at to what he appears to be looking at (Rihanna). In the same scene, there is a reaction shot where Drake responds to Rihanna when they interact.
I found many generic codes and conventions in the music videos such as the place where the actions took place which was New York, NY is a typical place where RnB videos would take place. Another generic code were the costume and appearance of the characters such as Drakes hoodie, Rihanna’s bling/tattoos and her Barbadian dancing on the streets which is a strong generic code as Barbados is a place where a lot of RnB music is produced. The bright colours shown through costumes are a strong link to the genre and the aspiring lives which has been shown in this music video.

The Song We Decided To Do Music Video Off

Torn On The Platform Lyrics Jack Penat

Once more just before Im leaving
Torn on the platform
Once more just before Im leaving
Torn on the platform
Cos Ill miss you and I love you
I know this is over just for mow
Cos I miss you, ohh, how I miss you
Youre not my girl you’re my town
A weekend away, leave the city today
Dont want the big smoke to leave me behind
The train leaves at 2, platform 3 Waterloo
50 p to the tramp makes me feel kind
I get a good seat , with a table my feet
Are up on the one in front everyone stares
Why do they care, like theres feelings in chairs
Trapped for 3 hours until I get there
Cos my
Eyes, eyes, eyes
Are not
Dry, dry, dry
As I
Realise, ise, ise
That in a few minutes this train will be gone
Sighs, sighs, sighs
City
Fly’s, fly’s, fly’s
Wonder
Why, why, why
Would anyone want to leave where I come from?
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
It’s 1.58 wish that I had been late
And missed the train and given them an excuse
But what is the use, I’ve less slack than a nouse
Do or die stay or go what shall I choose
Cos my
Eyes, eyes, eyes
Are not
Dry, dry, dry
As I
Realise, ise, ise
That in a few minutes this train will be gone
Sighs, sighs, sighs
City
Fly’s, fly’s, fly’s
Wonder
Why, why, why
Would anyone want to leave where I come from?
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
Like in a film the motion starts to slow
As the beeping carriage doors begine to close
Momenterily I’m standing froze
Then I jump between the gap
Land on the platform flat
I’m not
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform
Torn on the platform

Album Cover Analysis

This is the cover of Eminem’s 7th studio album called Recovery. Eminem is an American rapper and has worked with many other famous singers in past. If you look at the album cover from distance you will only be able to see just buildings and simple album cover, however when you look carefully at the album cover, there is lots of detail which will attracts the audience towards the album. The large interesting building in the background will grab audience attention and make the audience think what the building is about and how does it relate to the album. If you look carefully you can also see a glass box in which the artist, Eminem, is seated on a couch reading a book with a television in front of him. This brings question mark to the audience, how it relates to the album such as, is this album about Eminem motives. By the title “Recovery” it suggests that, it could relate to a recovery in Eminem’s personal life that has affected him.
There is also “Parental Advisory” logo printed on the right bottom of the album cover is displayed, which explains level of the maturity and warns the customers that the album contains offensive language and might not be appropriate for children. This also helps parent decide weather or not the material is suitable for their children to hear.
The album title “Recovery” is written in plain white, while the O is written with white cross to represent a hospital, allows the customers to question weather the building in the back ground is a hospital. It also makes us think if Eminem is recovering from drinking or drug problems in rehab, the E in the title is written backwards which is a trade mark of Eminem, nevertheless it remains a mystery as the cover doesn’t reveal sufficient information about the artist.

Textual Analysis; Just The Way You Are – Bruno Mars

“Just the way you are” is a song by American Hip-hop/Pop singer-songwriter Bruno Mars, from his debut studio album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans”. The album was realised in 2010 on July the 20th. The music video of the song was directed by Ethan Lader, and was realised worldwide on September 8, 2010. The song “Just the way you are” was written by The Smeezingtons, Khalil Walton and Needlz and produced by The Smeezingtons and Needlz. The music video also gained popularity by featuring Nathalie Kelly in it. She also featured in the film “Need for Speed” meaning that she is a recognised figure, this also means that people would watch the video just for her appearance. The song has been added to Radio 1 A Playlist in the United Kingdom, and was consider “just the way you are (Amazing)”. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

The lyrics of the song and music are visually mimicked to audience. Bruno Mars makes images out media tape in the cassette in the video, which was inspired by the Artwork of Erika Iris Simmons. Just the way you are music video has been criticised that the choice to act model Nathalie Kelley defeats the object of the song. This is because when Bruno Mars says, “When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change, Cause you're amazing, Just the way you are” and compliments Nathalie Kelly, when most of audience would like Nathalie Kelly just the way she is anyways. This was one of the YouTube comments: “The video would make more sense if the girl wouldn’t look like a gorgeous model! A more average looking girl would make the video slightly more beautiful. But that’s just my opinion.” But in my opinion I think starring Nathalie Kelly in the video was a good market strategy and it will encourage more people to view the video, also enlarges the target audience.

The music video starts on with the actress Nathalie Kelley listening to “just the way you are” on her music player. Bruno Mars stops the music player and get the cassette out of the Walkman and makes images from media tape of the cassette on the table. The instrumental of the song begins in the background as Bruno Mars pulls the media out of the cassette tape and organize it on the table in to letters forming his name followed by the song title. Following that Bruno creates image of a drum, on the table using tape media, Bruno Mars continued making images out media tape through out the video, which also included a portrait of Nathalie blinking her eyes and portrait of Bruno singing. Most of the images in the video use a mix of motion graphics, CGI (Computer-generated imagery) and real-time recording. CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) is software used for computer graphics or 3D computer graphics to give special effect in video games, films, television, commercials etc. The images look very artistic so it will draw artistic people towards the video and encourage viewing the video more.
The convention of this genre of music is that the artist plays the main role of the music video, along side the Nathalie Kelley. In “Just the way you are- Bruno Mars” music video there appears to be a love story, of a couple, and how much Bruno Mars loves Nathalie Kelley and how he thinks she is perfect the way she is, she doesn’t need to change and also signs his feelings about her. He also creates Nathalie Kelley’s face out cassette’s media tape and than plays the piano towards the end of the video, showing us he is also musically talented, that he can play the piano as well as sing. There are not many frequent cuts and most of the camera shots are medium or zoomed in to the faces of the characters to see the reaction and facial expressions. The emotions showed by the characters were happy, smiley, joyful and calm and it goes well with the genre of the music. This help builds calm, relaxing and comfortable mood on the screen. They also edited the video by using fast motion when Bruno Mars makes images out of media tape from the cassette to save time.

The music is supported by the visual in this video, for an example, when there is bell and drums played in the instrumental, a bell and drum can be seen and is as if they’re being played, which matches up together. “When I see your face, there’s not a thing that I would change, because you’re amazing, just the way you are”. This is a line from lyrics included in video and in the video it is as if he is signing those words to the actress, describing the way he feels towards her like Andrew Goodwin identified “There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals”. Bruno also tries to impress the actress by playing the piano. Some of the shots used where it’s a close up of Bruno Mars to capture his facial expression and to also make the audience feel as if he is singing those words to the actress. The lyrics also match the visual in another way, when Bruno sings about her hair and eyes, which is shown cleverly through the use of moving the media of the cassette tape into shape of her face, hair and eyes.

The mise en scene in this music video is cleverly linked to the lyrics of the song. For e.g: Bruno Mars sings, “Because you’re amazing, just the way you are”. This implies that he feels as if she’s perfect the way she is and he loves her because the way she is. He is saying this because the actress is wearing clothes that could be viewed as quite lazy and isn’t dressed up. Another feature of mise en scene used is the lighting. The lighting is placed behind each person through the windows as if it’s the sun shining through into the building; this helps to set a happy mood on the set. It also helps to focus on his feelings for this woman. This is also shown through the body language that they both show, and how the girl is getting embarrassed to hear these nice words from the boy.

In our media music video project we will not have any character singing the song as we will be performing acts on base of the lyrics on the song but, I am also thinking to keep a love theme like done in “Just the way you are- Bruno Mars” music video. In my opinion the message of “Just the way you are- Bruno Mars” music video is that, you should like your boyfriend or girlfriend or wife or husband for what they are and how they are.

Textual Analysis : Rihanna - Unfaithful

The video that I will be analysing is ‘Unfaithful’ by a famous known RnB singer Rihanna. The director of this video is Anthony Mandler, he is well known among the music scene and is known for a lot of popular urban music videos which he has directed, his most popular client is Rihanna whom he has directed many videos for since the beginning of her career in 2005.
The genre of this song would come under RnB as that is one of the genres that Rihanna is best known for, but this particular song is a ballad, ballads are known for their narrative based lyrics which normally represent a form of poetry and the director of the video has succeeded to show that in this video.
I think that there are two main characteristics in the video, the most prominent characteristics to represent the ballad side are the scenes where Rihanna is performing the song in an empty theatre hall with her ‘lover’ and when she is backstage in the theatre getting ready. The reason why I chose these two characteristics to represent the ballad is because the genre of a ballad is to tell the story and to represent a form of poetry, to which these two scenes have done easily, as the viewer is able to sense immediately, the emotion and the actual extent of the story in those scenes. To me, the side that represents the RnB side of the song is probably the most dominant being the flashy jeep of her man, the neighbourhood in which the video is shot, as the viewer can immediately tell what type of area it is, mostly assuming that its a black, most probably impoverished area, as those are normally the settings used for RnB settings.
The relationship between the lyrics of the song and the visual is very strong. The basic set up of the video being in a cafĂ© at the beginning where Rihanna first meets her lover, whilst being with her man , the performance shots where Rihanna is in the theatre performing her lyrics and story with her lover and some particular scenes being an exaggeration to the lyrics as there are some quite tough examples used in the lyrics, such as “our love, his trust, I might as well take a gun and put it to his head, get it over with” , when she quotes this , she is in the theatre performing with her ‘lover’, she is basically saying that she cant keep hurting her man because it’s killing him inside as he knows about her unfaithfulness, this may be a reason for the title of the song. In the same scene, you can see the passion coming from Rihanna’s character, she’s sitting next to her ‘lover’ while he is playing the piano and saying those words, the viewer may sense a slight reluctance from Rihanna’s character, sensing that she doesn’t want to give up her relation with her ‘lover’ but also doesn’t want to give up or hurt her man, better demonstrated in the phrase: “wanting her cake and eating it too” or a similar phrase “you cant have the best of both world”. A second important demonstration of the relationship between the song and the lyrics is “I don’t wanna be a murderer”, by this the viewer gets a remorse guilt but also exhaustion coming from Rihanna’s character, this shows that she is tired of the situation but they also sense a bit of confusion. The viewer can also see this as a connotation of being a murder as she don’t want to cause him pain, maybe to the extent, that this situation is literally destroying him after the lyrics “I don’t wanna do this anymore” , there is a strong heartbeat for about 10 seconds in which her and her lover get close, but the viewer realises that that was a sort of judgment time for her character, and the viewer assumes that those ten seconds were her making a decision of what to do, as at the end she comes out to hug her man.
I think there is also a strong relationship between the music and visuals. For example, what stands out to me the most is in the beginning, when there is piano being played at a very calm pace as Rihanna is getting ready also very calmly, then the beat seems to speed up with it first being the piano and then the violin which is being played very fast, this causes a dramatic effect which builds up a slight tensed atmosphere for the viewer, therefore the viewer will assume that something bad will happen or this song involves a problem, to which the director decided to flash different jump shots of Rihanna’s character with her man assuming to show and exaggerate the nature of her relationship, this example is also a point to prove that the video does change pace with the music as I explained.
To describe the relationship between any solo instruments, I would sum up the whole video and its effects as only the violin and the piano are used. But the more dominant instrument is without any doubt the piano. What makes the relationship even stronger is when the pace of the instrument changes, there is an immediate change in the visuals, no matter if it’s the scene, speed or the shots. One of the most dramatic piece of sound in the video is the 10 seconds heartbeat; this is a very strong link as it sums up the tone of the video and the story in the lyrics.
The record company was not only trying to sell this track but also the artist Rihanna herself, I think that because all of her released singles up till now have been the type that could be played in party’s or in a live atmosphere, however, Unfaithful is a much deeper song that could be felt by people, it involves emotions and the viewers could even relate to it. I also think that the record company went a little different on Rihanna this time, making her sing a slower song in which the viewers could hear the actual voice of Rihanna with just the company of the piano and violin. I think they tried to sell Rihanna as a diverse artist who could do a variety of sound, music and tone to her voice.
I think they way they tried to sell the track is firstly and most importantly being the narrative, as it isn’t the type we would normally see, and when we do, the narrative isn’t in much detail. Also, I think they wanted to show Rihanna as and artist being a normal person, with the same problems and the same situations as any other, by her being a adulterer in the video and many other women or men could relate to the narrative, whether it was the man woman vice versa being unfaithful. Another way is the characters that were used to cast in the video, for example if they chose unattractive characters for the video, the video wouldn’t be played which would mean that the record company would fail to make the track a hit. I think the overall way that this video was to represent the video was to represent the artist was to show her in a different light to what she’s been in already, the single was released a year after she came onto the scene, (when she was 16), so I think the concept of the video was not only to make her seem like a relatable person but also a matured person with the narrative of the song, most probably to attract a wider range of audience.
I think the audience would get the idea of the artist being on a sexual display, but I think that it’s done in a more sophisticated way, but still would be considered sexual form the audience. For example, in the video, Rihanna’s dressing, such as the tight black dress she wore in the beginning of the video when the piano was being played calmly, would be approved very seductive.
I think the video is both concept-based and narrative-based in an equal amount, the concept being about being unfaithful and the women making a decision and the narrative telling the story about the situation throughout the video. I think the director has been very smart when making this video, in other videos, they use narration in some small bits and the audience get confused about what is happening, but in this video they used a narrative consistently and the audience was very clear about what is going on in the video, the creativity put in this is amazing!
I think the ideological message being put across in this video is that first and mostly cheating all round no matter women or men, it only causes pain and confusion and your putting yourself and others into compromising decisions, I think the second more inspirational message would be the contradiction of a women stereotype that being we are and can be in control in any situation, though maybe in this video the situation is really bad, never the less , it shows that women are capable enough of doing every thing a man can do.
Overall, I would say that this video is very well made, due to the creative narrative and it also sends through allot of messages to the audience about the way that it represents gender and not being unfaithful with your partner because it will only cause you problems and difficult decisions. And not only does it send out a great message but also is relatable to the audience, and you could just watch the video to understand the lyrics of the song whereas just listening to the lyrics some people may not be able to understand what the song is about other than the emoting pain, which is another reason why this song is a success because of how well it explains the concept.

We struggled to choose our music video, we decided to look at different videos from the type of genre that we have in common and liked, which included, RnB, Rap, HipHop, Pop; reason I decied to do textual analysis essays on songs from these genre. Toddla T "take it back" was an initiall idea and came under the genre of Dance. We liked the song but didn't think we had the resources to film this song. We decided to go more mainstream and looked at a video by Chris Brown.  However, a mainstream artist is well known and to be compared to his video would actually probably prove to be too difficult.  Looking at other peoples ideas in class we decided to choose an Indie/Rock genre song by Jack Penate "Torn On The Platform".  We learnt that it had a much bigger target audience and would be easier to create rather than the genres we listened to or liked.
